Upgrade Windows 7 A card strikes

The author's computer has been using Windows Vista system, recently upgraded to Windows 7, but restarted after the overlay installation is completed, appears "Starting Windows" after the black screen of death It is. Repeatedly restarted repeatedly, the problem remains. Then I tried various remedies, such as unplugging all USB devices, booting into safe mode, etc., and finally only asking for "Da Niang" to find the problem.

After inspection, it was found that the AMD Catalyst graphics driver control panel file that was left in the previous Windows Vista system and the upgraded Windows 7 formed a compatibility conflict, so that it could not enter the normal mode. Under the Windows desktop. The Catalyst control panel is not the actual catalyst driver, but the ATIKMDAG.SYS file is part of the Catalyst control panel and it is the culprit. This problem often occurs when upgrading a Windows 7 system on a laptop or a computer with older hardware. Of course, the best solution is to install Windows 7 separately on another partition of the hard disk. However, some users have already selected the same system drive letter when installing. How to solve it?

Method 1:

In the installation process, replace the computer's graphics card with a non-AMD graphics card. After successfully installing and entering Windows 7, download and install the latest AMD catalyst driver and control panel. You can also choose not to install the catalyst control panel, only install the latest AMD graphics driver, and then switch back to the original AMD graphics card.

But this method requires the user to have a non-AMD graphics card, and users who do not have a separate display can use the display. If the author's motherboard is G31, an Intel GMA X3100 GPU is onboard and you can switch to it. Just enter the motherboard's BIOS and set it to use the onboard GPU instead of an external discrete graphics card. Usually the BIOS option is in the Advanced Chipset Features interface, such as “OnChip VGA” or “Primary Graphics Adapter".

Method 2:

If the user has an alternate display, it is a lucky solution to replace the display when installing the system. When the display changes, the system will reset the device, so the Catalyst control panel will also be adjusted, which will solve the problem of system black screen crash. It is also necessary to update the Catalyst Control Panel software and then switch back to the original display.

Method 3:

If there is no extra graphics card or display in the user's hands, it can be solved by the software method of deleting the file. After the system completes the upgrade and installation files, it will reboot to complete the installation. At this time, use the Windows 7 installation CD to start, do not choose to install Windows 7 in the interface that appears, click the "Repair computer" option.

Ignore all pop-up reminder options until the last “command prompt" option appears when a <;system recovery option"

When the command prompt loads, type "DEL C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\DRIVERS\\ATIKMDAG.SYS” and press Enter to delete the problematic Catalyst Control Panel file.

If the feedback is "The file was not found" error, the system may not be in the C drive, replace C to install the hard drive letter of the Windows 7 system. After deleting the default ATIKMDAG.SYS file, type “quit” and press Enter to close the command prompt and allow Windows 7 to restart.

When entering the Windows 7 desktop, removing ATIKMDAG.SYS will force the system to install the Catalyst Control Panel by default. Then download and install the latest AMD graphics driver and control panel.

In fact, this black screen of death problem only appears in the Windows 7 upgrade installation process, users do not have to be afraid to use AMD graphics card, after all, as long as the version of the Catalyst control panel is updated, it can be normal Use the A card. In addition, in running some games, there will also be a blue screen problem from ATIKMDAG.SYS. At this time, updating the Catalyst control panel can also solve the problem.
