Install Macintosh and UNIX print services in win2003

If you want to allow users of clients running non-Microsoft operating systems to print, the print server must have additional services installed. These additional print services include: Macintosh print service and UNIX print service, so how do I install these additional print services?

Note: The Macintosh print service is not available in Windows Web Server 2003.

How to install the print service

Log in as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group.

Insert the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Hold down the SHIFT key while inserting the disc to avoid it starting automatically.

Click Start , point to Control Panel , and then click “Add/Remove Programs.

Click Add/Remove Windows Components.

In the Components list, click “Other network files and print services" (but do not select or clear the check box), and then click Details.

In the "Other sub-components of network files and print services" list, click one or more of the following check boxes depending on the print service you wish to install:

Macintosh Print Service: This option allows Macintosh users to send print jobs to a print spooler on a server running Windows Server 2003.

If the AppleTalk protocol is not already installed, it will be installed automatically when you install the Macintosh print service.

UNIX Print Service : This option allows UNIX clients to output to any printer that the print server can use.

The LPR port and TCP/IP print server service are automatically installed when you install the UNIX print service.

Click OK and then click Next.

Click Finish.

Notes for Microsoft Print Services for UNIX

On UNIX, programs on one computer can use the Line Printer Remote (LPR) service to send documents to another computer Print spooler service. The receiving service is often referred to as the Line Printer Daemon (LPD).

The UNIX print service provides LPR and LPD services that run independently on a Windows Server 2003-based print server.

The Line Printer Daemon Service (LPDSVC) on the print server receives documents from the native LPR utility running on a UNIX client.

The LPR Print Monitor (Lprmon) on the print server sends a print job to the native LPD process on a UNIX machine with a printer attached.
