Printer Redirection Prints Jobs from Terminal The server or "remote desktop" computer routes the printer to the local computer (also known as "client computer”). There are two ways to access a local printer: automatic printer redirection and manual printer redirection. Manual redirection is used when there is no driver required by the local printer in the version of Windows running on the remote computer.

Automatic Printer Redirection

When the local printer uses a driver installed on the server, the printer automatically redirects. When logging in to a session on a terminal server, or a computer running Windows Professional or Server and "Remote Desktop", all printers installed on the network printer and the client (local) computer are automatically detected and localized on the server queue. The server can use the client printer settings of the default printer and some properties (such as duplex printing).

When you disconnect or end a session, the printer queue will be deleted and incomplete or pending jobs will be lost. Information about the client's local printers and settings is saved on the client computer. When you log in later, create a printer queue using the information stored on the client computer.

If the printer driver is not found on this server, the event is logged in the log and the client printer is not created. In order for the printer to be available, the driver must be manually installed on the remote computer.

Programs running on remote computers can use redirected printers. The redirected printer is displayed in the "Printers and Faxes" folder in the Control Panel and is named in the following format: Client Printer Name (from the client name).

When you disconnect or log out of a session, the print queue is deleted and print jobs that have not completed or are suspended are canceled.

Manual Printer Redirection

Although manual redirection of printers connected via USB ports is not supported, manual redirection of printers connected to LPT and COM ports on client (local) computers is possible. .

To manually redirect a client printer, contact your administrator and provide the name of your computer (or provide an IP address for Windows-based terminals). The client must connect to the remote computer during a manual redirect.
