System File Checker (Sfc.exe) in Windows XP is a utility that Windows uses to verify system file integrity and repair system files. In Windows XP, it's more powerful: Windows XP's System File Checker scans all protected system files to verify their version, also sets file cache size, clears file cache, and repopulates "%SystemRoot" %\\System32\\Dllcache" folder.

To enable the System File Checker in Windows XP, first run the Command Prompt: Click Start→All Programs→Accessories→Command Prompt, or click Start→Run. "Command, type "cmd" in the command line and press the Enter key. Then type "Sfc" at the cursor prompt in the "Command Prompt" window and press the Enter key. The program will give a Chinese prompt as shown.

For example, if we type "Sfc/SCANNOW", press the Enter key, the "System File Checker" will start to check whether the current system file is damaged, the version is correct, if an error is found. The program will ask you to insert the Windows XP installation CD to repair or replace the incorrect file. If the Dllcache folder is corrupted or unavailable, you can also use the "Sfc/scanonce" or "Sfc/scanboot" command to fix the contents of the folder to ensure the security and stability of the system.

Tip: In Windows 98, we can click "Start → Programs → Accessories → System Tools → System Information", and then click "Tools → System File Checker".
