How to import and export registry contents in Win XP

  
        The import and export functions of the registry are provided in the Regedit.exe registry editor. Users can export the registry keys to ordinary text files and view them through ordinary editing software (such as Notepad, WordPad or Microsoft Word). And edit and modify, and then edit the modified registry file and then import it into the registry, you can achieve the purpose of indirect modification of the registry.

Exporting a Registry Key to a Normal Text File

To export the contents of a registry key, follow these steps:

(1) Select the registry key you want to export.

(2) Select "File" ∣ "Export" command, open the "Export Registry File" dialog box, as shown in Figure 15.6.

(3) In the "Save in" drop-down list, you can select the location of the exported registry file. In the "File Name" text box, the user can enter the name of the exported registry file. In the Export Ranges option group, the user can select the All or Selected Branch option to determine whether to export all registry files or only the selected
registry key file.
(4) Click the "Save" button to export the selected registry file.
Viewing the exported registry file
To view the exported registry file, do the following:
(1) Double-click the "My Computer" icon to locate the exported registry file.
(2) Right-click the registry file and select the "Edit" command in the pop-up shortcut menu to open the registry file with the default Notepad program, as shown in Figure 15.7.

(3) If the user does not want to open the registry file with the Notepad program, you can also right-click the registry file and select "Open Mode" ∣ "Select Program" command in the pop-up shortcut menu to open " Open Method dialog box, as shown in Figure 15.8.

(4) In the "Select a program to use" list box, select the program to open the registry file (such as WordPad program).

(5) Click the "OK" button to open the registry file with this program, as shown in Figure 15.9.

(6) In the open registry file, the user can view, edit and modify it. Note that the exported registry file cannot be opened by double-clicking. Double-clicking the registry file will perform the merge operation of the registry.
