Windows XP SP3 and IE6/7/8 problem details

Microsoft has officially pushed the user to Windows XP SP3
, the upgrade package does not include IE7, but the browser related components have been updated, so when it comes to There are some things to be aware of when it comes to IE upgrade and uninstall issues. Microsoft IE8 deployment manager Jane Maliouta first explained this issue in the company blog as follows:

IE6 users

Everything is fine, users can continue to use IE6 under SP3 to get the latest Security update. Upgrading SP3 will not affect the user's personal settings in IE6.

IE7
Users

Existing SP2+IE7 users can upgrade SP3 normally, without affecting existing personal settings, and can continue to get the latest security updates. The only problem is that IE7 cannot be uninstalled at this time, and the IE7 icon in the Control Panel
Add Remove Program has been grayed out.

The reason for this problem is: When the user installs IE7 on SP2, the system will back up the IE6 file to the uninstall directory, and SP3 has already performed some of the components. Update. If the user uninstalls IE7 after upgrading SP3, the system will revert to some old version files in the uninstall directory, causing confusion. Therefore, Microsoft specifically shut down the uninstall function of IE7.

Therefore, for existing SP2+IE7 users, if you need to uninstall IE7 after upgrading SP3, you must first uninstall SP3 and then uninstall IE. The easiest way is if you think it is possible to uninstall IE7 in the future, then you must uninstall IE7 before upgrading SP3, and then re-install after the upgrade is complete.

IE8
Beta 1 User

The problem is similar to IE7. Microsoft has stricter regulations on IE8. SP2+IE8 Beta 1 users can't even get SP3 updates through Windows Update. Therefore, users should first uninstall IE8 Beta 1 and then upgrade SP3. After the upgrade is complete, install IE8 Beta 1 and everything will be fixed.
