Enabling and Running the FTP Service

  
If you want to allow users to upload or download files in the site, you need to set up FTP on the web server. Regardless of whether the site is on the intranet or on the Internet, the principle of uploading and downloading files in the provided location using FTP is the same. You need to place the files in a directory on the FTP server so that users can establish an FTP connection and transfer files via an FTP client or an FTP-enabled web browser. This article describes how to enable and run the FTP service on a Web server.

Installing FTP in IIS 7.0

To set up an FTP site, you must first install the FTP service through the role management tool in Windows Server 2008. The specific process is as follows:

Installing the FTP service on the Windows client

1. Click "Control Panel" on the "Start" menu.

2. Click "Programs" and then click "Turn Windows features on or off."

3. In the "Windows Features" dialog box, expand the "Internet Information Services" node.

4. Expand the "FTP Publishing Service" node and click the "FTP Publishing Service" checkbox.

5. Click the "FTP Management Console" check box and the "FTP Server" check box, and then click "OK".

Installing the FTP Service on a Windows Server

1. On the Start menu, click Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.

2. In the Role Summary section of the Server Manager pane, click Web Server (IIS).

3. In the "Web Server (IIS)" section, click "Add Role Service."

4. Under "Role Services", select "FTP Publishing Service". This will install the FTP service and the FTP management console.

5. Click "Next" and then click "Install".

Starting the FTP service in IIS 7.0

Just like IIS 7.0 does not install the FTP service by default, when you install the FTP service on IIS 7.0, it will not be started by default. service. Therefore, the service must be started after the FTP service is installed. If the FTP service has been stopped or paused before, you may also need to start the service.

Starting the FTP service on the Windows client

1. Click "Control Panel" on the "Start" menu.

2. In the Control Panel, click System and Maintenance, and then click Administrative Tools.

3. Double-click "Services", right-click "FTP Publishing Service" and select "Start" from the menu.

Starting the FTP service on a Windows server

1. On the Start menu, click Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.

2. In the Role Summary section of the Server Manager pane, click Web Server (IIS).

3. Under "System Services" in the "Web Server (IIS)" section, click "FTP Publishing Service" and then click "Startup".
