Sygate's FAQ Daquan

Listed here are some common problems and solutions. If these still do not solve the problem you encountered while using SyGate, please visit: http://www.sygate.com/faq.htm.

Does SyGate support VPN?

SyGate supports AltaVista Tunnel, Bay VPN, Shiva VPN and PPTP (Microsoft VPN) and supports a VPN client on the SyGate network. This allows your SyGate network client to communicate over a secure LAN. If you want a VPN server, SyGate Server can connect to the Microsoft PPTP service running on Windows NT, so remote VPN clients can access the SyGate network. SyGate's built-in firewall also helps your VPN block non-VPN access from your ISP.

What is the security of SyGate?

SyGate creates a one-way wall between the public network and your private network (LAN). Only those connections that you specify in the SyGate settings file (apprule.cfg) or initiated by the LAN itself can enter your LAN. That is, unless your network has a request or is set in the apprule.cfg file, all attempts to enter will be rejected.

Can I dial into SyGate Network?

Computers that provide dial-in services must be behind SyGate, not the computer running SyGate software. At the same time, the remote computer must use the same subnet mask and gateway as the computer on the local area network.

What should I do if my actual computer usage exceeds the number of license users?

If you are purchasing a three-user license, you can only have three users accessing them at a time, and the rest of the computers will not be accessible. At this point one of the three users disconnected from the Internet and the other user was ready to use. If this is the case, it is recommended that you purchase a license for more users.

What is APPRULE.CFG?

APPRULE.CFG allows applications on your computer to access the Internet normally. Sygate has created a number of settings to meet your different needs, including: web server, FTP server, VPN, games, chat and more. To make the function work, open the APPRULE.CFG file and remove the previous "#" sign. The default APPRULE.CFG file contains the most commonly used features, of course, you can customize one for yourself.

How to use SyGate on non-Windows computers?

For the Mac, the easiest thing to do is to make sure that the SyGate's built-in DHCP server is up and running, and point to the SyGate server on your Mac's TCP/IP settings. For Unix or Linux computers, set the static IP address to be the same as the SyGate server's subnet mask, the DNS is the same as the SyGate server's DNS, and the gateway points to the SyGate's internal IP address.

Why can't my SyGate Client (client) receive calls from NetMeeting?

SyGate 3.1 cannot pass calls from NetMeeting because NetMeeting dynamically allocates callers' ports. A computer with SyGate Server installed can send and receive NetMeeting calls. The SyGate client is also having no problem sending NetMeeting calls.

Why can't my SyGate Client send and receive email?

If you are using a cable modem, we know that the ISP needs to set the "Domain suffix" on each computer. If you have experience with cable modems, the same domain name suffix will be set on the SyGate server TCP/IP for use on the workstation. If you are unable to get these settings, sygate has an automatic page that provides this information, please visit: http://www.sygate.com/support.htm

How do I set up automatic dialing?

If SyGate Server is not capable of auto-dialing, this may be a problem with your Internet connection settings. Recheck the Internet settings in the control panel and set it to auto-dial.

Why can't my SyGate Client browse the Internet?

Make sure your Internet connection (usually we use Netscape and Internet Explore) is not set to "Connect via a proxy server".

Confirm that your SyGate Server can access the Internet. If you can't access it, you need to solve this problem first.

Check the DNS settings in the TCP/IP settings on the SyGate Server and go to the prompt (emulation DOS status) and type "ping xxxx", where xxxx is the IP address on each DNS server. If you can't get feedback from the first one in the list, there is a problem with the ISP's first-rank DNS server. Switching the list order of TCP/IP usually solves such problems and enables the Client to access the Internet.

If you can get feedback from the server with the "ping" command, but still can't browse the Internet, try to "ping" the client's IP address from the SyGate Server. If you do not get normal feedback, it is recommended that you diagnose these computers with SyGate Diagnostic. Also check for external devices that cause these computers to fail to communicate over TCP/IP, such as network cables, hubs, and network drives, even the installation of TCP/IP itself.
