Microsoft's frank Windows7 netbook installation tool does contain open source code

November 14th news, Microsoft said today that its investigation confirmed that WindowsUSB/DVD Tool designed to help users more easily install Windows7 on netbooks does contain open source Code software code.

According to foreign media reports, Microsoft executive Peter Galli published a blog post, "through the investigation we found that this tool does contain open source software code, although we are not interested.

Although we commissioned a third party to develop this tool, we did not conduct a serious inspection and therefore were responsible for it. We also checked other code and found no similar situation."

Microsoft said it will release the source code and binary code of WindowsUSB/DVDTool next week under the GPL v2 license agreement. Microsoft will once again offer this tool to users through its app store.

After blogging Rafael Livra posted a blog saying that WindowsUSB/DVDTool seems to use the code of the ImageMaster open source project, Microsoft removed WindowsUSB/DVDTool earlier this week.

The Windows USB/DVD Tool is a tool Microsoft has developed to solve the problem of installing Windows 7 on a device such as a netbook that does not have an optical drive.

Publishing software with an open source license agreement is not the first time for Microsoft. Microsoft has released several Linux drivers under the GPLv2 license.
