The file is hidden in the root directory of the C drive. The hidden hiberfil.sys file is exactly the same size as its own physical memory. When you put the computer into hibernation, Windows 7 writes all memory contents to the hiberfil.sys file before shutting down the system. Then, when you turn the computer back on, the operating system uses hiberfil.sys to put all the information back into memory and the computer is restored to the state it was in before the shutdown. Windows 7 does not delete this file, but keeps it on the hard disk, which will take up a portion of the disk space in vain. After a long time, your hard disk can't be eaten.

Windows7 safely delete the hibernation file: Run cmd.exe as the administrator to open the command line window, then enter: powercfg -h off, press Enter.
