Microsoft introduced Windows 8 new file system ReFS

A few days ago Microsoft announced the ReFS file system that will be used on Windows 8. The new ReFS file system developed by Microsoft is designed to meet the needs of current and future Windows storage. It handles a large number of files, detects corrupted files and enables cross-machine storage sharing. Currently ReFS will only be used on Windows 8 servers, so most Windows 8 users will not be able to experience performance improvements at the beginning of ReFS release. Microsoft plans to conduct a comprehensive test before installing the file system on the Windows 8 client.

ReFS plugs into the storage stack just like the existing file system, maintaining component compatibility on top of the NTFS file system. ReFS and storage space complement each other to form a complete Windows 8 storage system. Its main advantages include enabling Windows 8 to detect various disk corruptions, support data segmentation, and assign copy-on-write mode (COW). Microsoft has previously used the COW concept in SQL Server products and VSCS bulk photocopying services to capture snapshots of large volumes of data
