chkdsk is a Windows system comes with a disk repair tool, usually after the computer is turned off abnormally, the system will automatically call the chkdsk tool for disk scanning and repair. At the same time, we can also open a command prompt on the Windows system and manually run the chkdsk tool for detection and repair. In the latest Win10 system, Microsoft has not abandoned this classic tool, but also used several new command parameters in the Windows 8 era to meet more abundant needs and achieve more powerful functions. The following MS chiefs will share with you the parameters and functions of the chkdsk command:
chkdsk command + parameter format:
CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]] [/B] [/scan] [/spotfix]
classic chkdsk command Parameters:
volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point or volume name.
filename FAT/FAT32 only: Specifies the file to check for fragmentation.
/F Fix errors on the disk.
/V On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of each file on the disk. On NTFS: Show cleanup messages (if any).
/R Find bad sectors and restore readable information (when /scan is not specified, /F is implied).
/L:size NTFS only: Change the log file size to the specified number of KB. If no size is specified, the current size is displayed.
/X If necessary, force the volume to be unmounted first. All open handles for this volume will be invalid (implicit /F).
/I NTFS only: Checks the index items for less strength.
/C NTFS only: Skip loop checking within the folder structure.
/B NTFS only: Reevaluate bad clusters on the volume (implicit /R)
Win8/Win10 new chkdsk command parameters:
/scan NTFS: Running an online scan on a volume
/forceofflinefix NTFS only: (must be used with "/scan") Skip all online repairs; all faults found are queued for offline repair (ie " Chkdsk /spotfix").
/perf NTFS only: (must be used with "/scan") Use more system resources to complete the scan as quickly as possible. This can have a negative impact on the performance of other tasks running on the system.
/spotfix NTFS only: Run point fix on volume
/sdcleanup NTFS only: Unwanted security descriptor data (implicit /F) for garbage collection.
/offlinescanandfix Run an offline scan on the volume and fix it.
/freeorphanedchains FAT/FAT32/exFAT only: Releases all independent cluster chains without restoring their contents.
/markclean FAT/FAT32/exFAT only: If no corruption is detected, the volume is marked as clean, even if /F is not specified.
