Windows upgrade is getting faster and faster, Win98 only figured out that Win2000 came out, just used Win2000 habits, XP began to release, so it seems that we are always following Microsoft's footsteps. In order not to give up the old system, but want to use the new system, installing multiple systems is a good choice, but the trouble is not completely solved. Multiple operating systems are prone to problems. A system problem will directly affect the normal operation of the entire system, and it takes us a lot of time to switch back and forth between different systems.
So we started to think whimsy, let multiple systems run at the same time, just like multiple processes in Linux, but this seems to be unlikely, so it only has to dispel this idea and continue in multiple systems. Between. There seems to be a famous saying in the IT industry. The only thing we can't do is that we can't think of it. This famous saying applies to the service industry. The VMware Workstation software allows us to run multiple operating systems at the same time.
VMware Workstation introduces the concept of a virtual operating system, from the existing hardware, a part of the memory and hard disk space, let the virtual operating system use, and then with VMware management software, thereby achieving more The purpose of the system running at the same time. There is no difference between a virtual system and a real system. You can have your own hardware, BIOS, etc. You can operate it on its own, including partitioning and formatting. Don't worry about any impact on the existing system.
Installation and system requirements:
Such excellent software installation is more troublesome, you have to apply for the registration code to use the software, and can only use 30 days . Don't worry so much, use it later. The registration address of the registration code is: http://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/newstore/wkst_eval_register.jsp, you need to enter a bunch of personal information, in order to prevent foreigners from knowing our important information, you can enter it casually, but EMAIL The address must be entered correctly, otherwise you will not receive the registration code. Registration is complete, if you are successful, you can receive the registration code immediately.
Next, download the installation file, the site provides multiple download addresses, you can choose fast. Http://www.vmware.com/download/ws_beta.html, this is the download page, it should be noted that VMware has Windows version and Linux version, don't make a mistake. (Please click here for local downloads in the Pacific.)
VMware also has certain requirements for computers. The minimum configuration is PII266, 128M, a large amount of hard disk space for installing multiple systems. This configuration is relatively low now, but if you want to run well, it is best to use a high configuration, otherwise the process of use will be a painful experience.
There are also requirements for the software environment. The following only describes the requirements for the version of For Windows.
Windows XP Professional and Home Editions
Windows 2000 Professional, Server Edition, and Advanced Server Editions
Windows NT Workstations and Servers, Pack 3 or higher
It is recommended that you use Win2000, it is stable, and its settings are not as troublesome as NT. (mainly I am not familiar with NT, so I feel that NT settings are more troublesome.)
Note: The computer configuration of this test is C400, 128M, 40G, network card, TNT2, and the system is Win2000 advanced server version. The VMware version is Vmware Workstation 3.0 Beta for Windows.
The installation process is still very simple, just after copying the program files, N new hardware will be added automatically. Anyway, all the way to "ok", "yes" can be, if the system does not move for a long time, press a few times to try. The length of the installation depends on how your machine is configured. I have a slower installation here, which is about ten minutes. After rebooting, I checked the hardware configuration of the system and added a lot of new hardware. The detailed list is not listed, so you can take a look. And VMware also automatically added self-starting items, and several more VMware-related programs.
VMware use:
Create a virtual operating system:
After starting VMware, you will be prompted to enter the registration code, how you have not received the mail , then you can go to the VMware site to enter your EMAIL and password, try again, if you forget the password, then you only have to re-register. (Sorry, the software used to write more, it will cost more, everyone forgive me!)
After entering the main window, select "New Virtual Machine" to create a new virtual system. Although VMware provides the typical production method of "Typical", it is not good to find this way. One major drawback is that you can't adjust the size of the hard disk space. Therefore, it is recommended that you use the "Custom" custom production method. Of course, if you are in trouble, you can not listen to my advice. But to know that the accumulation of experience is a painful price. At first, I used the typical, it took a lot of time to organize the hard disk and install the system. (Don't listen to me, when you cry, ha...)
After selecting the method of production, the following are some related settings. (In the custom way, for example, there are not so many steps, but they are similar.)
1. Select the type of operating system, which is selected by going down the list. The list contains all the files since Windows was published. Versions, as well as DOS and Linux.
2, specify the name of the system and the location of the storage, no need to modify, the default value.
3, define the size of the memory, the size of the memory can be adjusted, the default is 64M, in order to make the system run faster, you can adjust the value of the larger.
4, the choice of network connection. Of course, you must have a network card first, and you find that VMware has a problem. It is necessary to transfer data between existing systems. Only by using a network card, there may be other methods, but I have not found it. This may have to trouble AD, the help is all E text, do not understand. In general, select "Use Bridged networking".
5. Hard disk type and space selection. There are also multiple options for creating a new virtual hard disk, using an existing virtual hard disk, and creating a new physical hard disk. In order to be on the safe side, it is best not to choose to create a new physical hard disk, which may damage the existing system. Anyway, I dare not take this risk, except for advanced users. (For example, BBQ can choose this item. It is the public machine. Besides, there are more machines, one more, and many more.) For ordinary users, please select "Create a new virtual disk". Next, set the size of the hard disk, the default is 4G, set up a small bit, or else when installing a new system, the time to check the hard disk will be very long, I started to choose the default, I went to see half of the boring idol drama Only completed. It is recommended to set it to 1G, and it is enough to install an operating system. Then down is the place where the hard disk file is stored. The default is OK. In this case, VMware stores the system as a single file. It is not that you spend 1G, so this space cannot be used, but the upper limit of the system is 1G.
Complete the above 5 steps, basically complete a system setup, you can set up multiple systems in the same way. If you feel that there is a problem with these settings, you can open the system's right-click menu in the main window and select Settings to modify it. But found a problem, the size of the hard disk space can not be modified, so adjust the size of the hard disk when you start to adjust. And in the settings can also add other hardware, such as sound card, SCSI card, etc., but in actual use found that VMware's support for the sound card is not good, I did not hear the sound for a long time.
Finish the setup, this is not finished yet, just started, then install the system in the virtual space.
Installation of virtual operating system:
Before installing the new system, you need to prepare the boot disk, preferably the boot CD, which is convenient. I remember that when I started the installation, the idea was always a bit confusing. In fact, you just want to think of it as a new machine with only hardware and no system.
After selecting the virtual system in the main window, click “Power On” on the toolbar to start the system. Of course, you need to put the boot CD. At this time, you will see the boot screen of the machine, the icon of the BIOS, the memory self-test, everything is no different from the startup of the computer. To enter CMOS, press "F2", you can also set multiple parameters, nothing special, just use the plus and minus keys when adjusting the boot sequence, it is special, has not seen before . When you click the running window with the mouse, you can no longer move the mouse to the existing system. You can only operate in the window. To switch to the existing system, press the key combination "Ctrl+Alt+Esc". .
After booting, partition first, instead of rushing to install the system, format the hard disk. It is best to copy the installation files to a virtual hard disk for installation, which is faster to install. There is nothing to say about the installation of the system, all you have to do is wait patiently. I installed Win98 and it took almost an hour.
Use of virtual system:
After the installation, you will find that the color of the system is only 16 colors, and the speed of running is very slow. It is very difficult to move the mouse. It starts to be the graphics card. The driver is not installed, but it is not. You will need to install "VMware Tools", there will be a prompt below the run window, or you can choose from the menu "Settings". With this tool installed, it runs much faster. If you only have VMware running on your existing system, select "Full Screen" on the toolbar, and you don't feel the existence of the existing system at all, as if you were using a single system.
So you have completed the installation of a virtual system, and the use of this virtual system needless to say, and no difference with ordinary use, not much to say. Only how to transfer data with existing systems is explained here. In fact, it is also very simple, just like two single machines with network cards, the same as the establishment of peer-to-peer networks, but only the installation of network cards and network cables. You also need to set the IP address, install the protocol required for sharing, and create a shared directory. Once this is all done, you can share the data.
To turn off the virtual system, do not use "Power Off" on the toolbar. Instead, install the system to shut down normally, use "Power Off" and The same effect is achieved by directly turning off the power of the computer. When the computer is turned on again, the hard disk is also detected. In fact, you can also use the "Suspend" suspend function instead of shutting down the system, so that the system will automatically save the current state. The next time you only need to use "Resume" to restore, you can return to the state when it is closed. Startup is much faster.
If you want to delete a virtual system, you can directly operate in its right-click menu, but this only deletes the list, the corresponding file is not deleted, you need to find the directory where the system files are stored. Delete the entire directory, each operating system corresponds to a directory named after the operating system name, the location of the directory is generally in "My Documents."
You can start multiple systems at the same time, of course, this will cost you a lot of system resources, and sometimes will prompt you for insufficient memory, because VMware sets the memory limit. The default value is 64M. For example, if a virtual system has been set to 64M and it is already started, then you will be booting other systems. At this time, you can select the menu "Settings/Preferences", select the "Memory" inside to adjust the size of the memory limit, or directly remove the memory limit function.
Summary:
VMware brings us a new concept that allows us to easily run multiple operating systems, allowing you to easily switch between different systems. Of course, the price paid is that it consumes a lot of system resources.
