What are the misunderstandings in modifying the registry?

Modifying the registry is somewhat involved in some of our operations, but for many novice users, the registry is like a taboo topic, as if a modification would collapse, in fact Is the use of the registry's misunderstanding.

Misunderstanding 1: I think it is dangerous and I don't dare to modify it

Some friends regard the registry as “the forbidden zone”, and they are not easy to make changes. When they need to do it, they are also scared and timid. I am afraid that once the system is modified improperly, it will collapse immediately; in fact, the registry is not as fragile as we think, just for stability and compatibility considerations, some of which are more conservative, which gives us the registry. The preconditions for modification and optimization, so that the proper modification of the registry will not lead to system paralysis, but also can effectively improve the system performance and strengthen the system security, and even solve some unrealistic problems, of course. The premise is to know the registry. In fact, for beginners, even if you are not very familiar with the registry, you don't need to shrink your hands. As long as you pay attention to backing up the registry before you modify it, you can safely and boldly slap the registry. In the unlikely event that you have recovered from the registry file you have backed up (provided you have access to the system).

Tip:

If you have a big problem modifying the registry, that is, even the system can't enter (but this rarely happens, only 1 probability, unless it is Inadvertently deleted a root key), you can take the following measures:

1. For Windows 98, you can press "ld8;" in the DOS real mode at startup, type "ldreg" at the command line. /restore”Command to restore (you can also enter safe mode to restore the registry).

2. For Windows XP, you can only choose to enter the safe mode to restore the registry, of course, you can also use System Restore to restore the system to a set restore point.

Misunderstanding 2: Directly modify the far-off situation

The front is an extreme, that is, some people dare not modify the registry, but now some people go to the other extreme - they learn to modify After the registry, it may be because I have tasted the sweetness, and I don’t like to take the registration form. “Open the brush”, no matter what is wrong with the system or what function to set, you must find the head of the registry, as if How to look is not pleasing to the eye, have to give people "sports surgery" rdquo; can not; or want to show off their "old birds" in front of the "Rookie", but they are so far-fetched, take away Jane’s approach can only be ridiculous. Facts speak louder than words. Let's look at a few examples:

1. Disable WinXP folder auto-expanding

“Folder auto-expanding" (scientific name is “ simple folder view ”) is a new user-friendly feature added to WinXP, which is automatically expanded when you click on the folder list on the left side of the Explorer (if there is a sub-folder). If you don't like it, you can disable it. Some people have to modify the registry to achieve the purpose, that is, the DWORD value under the subkey of the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced” subkey is changed from 1 to 0 to prohibit this. Item function, in fact, there is absolutely no need for this, because this setting is already in the Explorer's "Folder Options" dialog box. The specific method is to open the "Folder Options" dialog box and switch to “View” In the "Advanced Options", find "Show simple folder view in the Explorer folder list" and cancel the checkmark in front of it.
