Backup IIS Configuration To back up your IIS configuration, follow these steps: 1. On the local computer, in the IIS snap-in, click the computer icon under Internet Information Services. 2. Click Actions and select Backup/Restore Configuration. 3. Click Create Backup, select the name of the backup file, then click OK. Note: The default backup location is the %SystemRoot%\\system32\\inetsrv\\MetaBack folder. If you want to save the backup file to a different location, you can copy the file from this default location to another location. Save a copy in the default location for easy recovery. Note that by default, C:\\Winnt is the %SystemRoot% folder in Microsoft Windows 2000. 4. Click Close. Note: This backup method provides a way to restore only IIS settings, not content files. This backup method does not work if the operating system is reinstalled. You cannot use a backup file to restore an IIS configuration on a different computer that is running Windows 2000. On the local computer In the IIS snap-in, click the computer icon under Internet Information Services. 2. Click Actions and select Backup/Restore Configuration. 3. In the Configure Backup Name dialog box, select a backup file and click Restore. When asked if you want to restore the configuration settings, click Yes. Back to the top Restoring IIS Configuration After IIS Reinstallation To restore the IIS configuration after IIS has been removed and reinstalled, follow these steps: 1. On the local computer, in the IIS snap-in, click Internet Information Services Computer icon. 2. Click Actions and select Backup/Restore Configuration. 3. In the Configure Backup Name dialog box, select the backup file you have created and click Restore. Although the error message indicates that the restore has failed, a portion of the backup configuration is restored. 4. At the command prompt, type the following command: cscript.exeX:\\InetPub\\AdminScripts\\Adsutil.vbs enum w3svc where X is the drive letter of the drive where IIS is installed. From the listed settings, find WamUserName and the associated WAMUserPass value. Note: To use the Adsutil.vbs utility, you must have Windows Script Host installed. 5. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. Click Local User Manager and click Users. 6. Double-click the IWAM_computername user account. Type the WAMUserPass value that you retrieved from the previous step and click OK. 7. In the Configure Backup Name dialog box, select the backup file you have created and click Restore. This will completely restore your configuration. Note: If you change the ID of an out-of-process application, those applications revert to the previous IWAM username.
