Manage Active Directory Database (Compression/Mobile) for Windows Server 2008 R2

The Active Directory database includes the database files NTDS.dit and log files. Considering the best performance, it is recommended to put the log files and database files in a separate hard drive or RAID in the production environment, and ensure that there is sufficient free space on the disk according to the size of the network. Since the Active Directory database is a self-maintaining system, it generally does not require routine maintenance (other than backup). However, the following situations may occur and may be managed:

Low disk space, current hardware failures, and the need to recover physical space after a large number of global edits have been deleted or removed.

The management of Active Directory databases includes movement, compression (defragmentation), and more.

This lab uses the environment deployed in Active Directory of Windows Server 2008 R2 as the operating environment.

Lab Requirements:

Compress the Active Directory database and move the Active Directory database to c:ntds

Experimental steps:

1. System backup. In order to prevent the experiment from failing, it is strongly recommended to back up the system before the experiment (omitted)

2. View the information about the Active Directory database (as shown below)

3. Stop the Active Directory Service (can Run net stop ntds in the service management console services.msc or in the command line state.

4. Enter ntdsutil and press Enter. Then type the activate instance ntds, files command.

With the help of the command. You can use the logical integrity of the integrity database, etc.

5. Enter compact to c:, compress the Active Directory database, and place the compressed file in c:. After the compression is complete, copy the c:ntds.dit file to the original folder and delete the *.log log file for the folder.

The following is a move operation

6. Type move db to c:ntds. This command will finish copying the database file to c:ntds. The system will automatically detect whether this folder exists ( If it does not exist, this folder will be created automatically. At the same time, the security of this folder will be automatically set after the computer is restarted.

7. Type move logs to c:ntds to move the log file.

8. Press quit twice to quit the ntdsutil command.

9. Restart your computer. Use the event viewer to view related logs and c:ntds related information (security, files) to see if the system is working properly.
