Windows Server 2008 R2 new features analysis

We have heard a lot about the desktop version of Windows 7 news, the latest news is that Microsoft said it will no longer release the Beta version of Windows 7, the next upgrade version will be the most Close to the RC version of the final release, this also means that the final version is getting closer and closer to us. However, according to Microsoft's enterprise operating system roadmap, the server version of Windows 7 may be released later, and will not be officially released until 2010.

Microsoft Enterprise Operating System Roadmap

From the roadmap, you can see the latest enterprise operating system, which is the Windows 7 server version. The development code "Windows 7 Server" is named, but named "Windows Server 2008 R2", which means that the server version of Windows 7 is not like a major product upgrade from Win 2000 Server to Win 2003, but only existing Windows. An update to Server 2008 can be understood as an enhanced version of Win 2008.

At the Professional Developers Conference (PDC2008) at the end of October 2008, Microsoft first demonstrated the Pre-Beta version of Windows Server 2008 R2, but the version was not perfect at the time, and no download trial was available. Until January 10, 2009, Microsoft released a beta version of Windows Server 2008 R2 on its website to provide users with a free 30-day download trial. The beta version includes the Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, Data Center Edition, Web Edition, and Itanium Edition. The test version is only available in English.

Although Windows Server 2008 R2 is not essentially different from Win 2008, the basic features are of course the same, but the R2 version incorporates some very attractive features:

X64 Platform: Windows Server 2008 32-bit and 64-bit versions are provided separately, but in R2, 32-bit will be completely discarded, only the 64-bit version. In the server field, 32-bit processors are already sunset and will be completely replaced by 64-bit processors in a few years, so Win 2008 R2 will be fully built on the X64 platform, and Microsoft's first operating system with only 64-bit version.

Support for 256 logical processors: At the 2008 Microsoft Hardware Conference (WinHEC), Microsoft introduced Windows 7 features that Win 7 can support up to 256 logical processors, also mentioned with Windows 7 Windows Server 2008 R2 with the same architecture can also support up to 256 logical processors. Of course, support for multiple logical processors makes more sense on the server side. The so-called logical processor refers to the number of physical processors multiplied by the number of cores and the number of threads. In other words, Windows Server 2008 R2 can support 64 physical processors * 2 cores * 2 threads = 256 logical processors. Windows Server 2008 can support up to 64 logical processors.

Hyper-V 2.0 with Live Migration: In Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft's server virtualization tool Hyper-v has been enhanced with the addition of Live Migration technology. Real-time migration between physical hosts and virtual machines can be achieved in a matter of milliseconds without disrupting services or user links. The data center also achieves true virtualization, largely from the management of software and hardware, all in a single operating system framework. The Hyper-V 2.0 virtual machine is enhanced with logical processor and memory support. Currently Hyper-V can support 24 logical processors, while each virtual machine in Hyper-V 2.0 can support 32 logical processors and up to 64GB. Memory. Previous 12 Next Read the full story
