Windows 2000 ID file type

  

When we install an application in Windows 2000, the program is usually registered in the system and associated with the file with the corresponding extension according to the function of the program. After associating with the file, we can directly open the application to process the file by double-clicking on the associated file. If the user wants to associate a certain type of file with an installed application or modify an established association, the following steps can be performed:

1. In the "My Computer" window, double-click "Control Panel" Icon to open the Control Panel window.

2. Double-click the Folder Options icon to open the Folders dialog box, and then click the File Types tab, as shown in Figure 4-21.

3. In the "Registered file types" list box, list the associations between the file types that have been registered in the system and the extensions used by the files. When you select a file type in the list box, detailed information about this type of file is listed in the details box at the bottom of the dialog box, including how to open it and some advanced settings.

4. If you want to create an association or register a new file type, click the "New" button, the "New Extension" dialog box will open, click the "Advanced" button to expand the dialog box. , as shown in Figure 4-22. In the File Extension Name text box of the dialog box, enter the extension of the type of file you want to create a new association with, and select the file type in the Associated File Type drop-down list box. Once set, click the "OK" button and you will see the new file type in the "File Type" tab.

5. If you want to change the way the associated file is opened, for example, if you want to use another program to open the file of the current type when you double-click it, you can select the file type you want to change, at the bottom of the tab. Clicking the "Change" button in the details box will open the "Open With" dialog box shown in Figure 4-23, which lists the applications that have been registered in the system, and selects the application that you want to use to open the file. Program; if the application you want to use is not registered in the system, click the "Other" button to open the "Open with" dialog for selection. Finally click the "OK" button to close the dialog.
