Unlike search assistants, the target location for desktop search is globally defined - although you can search in the current folder or at a specified location, it will only search for folders that have been indexed. Fortunately, when we search from the folder or the Start menu command, even if we use desktop search by default, we can still switch to the search assistant with one of the options below.

If you want to reset the search assistant to the default search engine and limit desktop search to the search desktop toolbar in the system tray area, desktop search can also follow your intent because it provides you with Such an option - just finding these options can be a bit more difficult. Try entering a search term in the toolbar and pressing the Enter key to open the full desktop search window. On the right side of the toolbar, you'll see a folder browse icon similar to what you see in the browser. Clicking on the icon brings up a menu with a large icon or small icon (the large icon gives the first few words of each file in the search results), the location of the preview pane, and the desktop search options.

You can find the "Use Search Assistant" option in the "General" tab. If you choose this option, the search assistant will not switch to desktop search every time you perform a search, as this option is not optional. Go to "Index Location" in the options and you will find out which content to index. If you choose the "Customize Folders and E-mail Storage Locations" option, you can select the folders you want to index and search to improve the relevance of your search results.
