XP Troubleshooting Common Routines

After a Windows XP failure, we first need to understand what is going on, which are generally related to the system's settings, and then facilitate the countermeasures. Therefore, in the process of solving the system failure, the methods we often use are:

1. The life-saving F8 key leads to the safe mode

To enter the safe mode, just start the computer. While pressing the F8 key, select “Safe Mode” in the advanced startup options menu that appears. In safe mode, Windows XP starts with minimal device drivers, minimal services, and minimal settings, and does not load third-party programs. Therefore, when you encounter a system failure caused by killing viruses, malicious programs, uninstalling stubborn files, etc., you can directly enter the safe mode to save yourself.

2. Check the secrets running behind Windows XP

Windows XP startup speed suddenly slows down, 80% is caused by some self-starting programs or some processes. Enter "msconfig" in the "Run" command, open the "System Configuration Utility", set and disable the system's self-starting program.

Pressing the "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" button brings up the "Windows Task Manager" to check if the system process is suspicious. For the rookie friend Dong Master, the "360 Security Guard" is recommended separately. It can easily check the self-starting items, processes, and clearly tell the user the details of the process.

3. Check and adjust system services

When checking and setting system services, do not use "System Configuration Utility". Be sure to click "Start → Run" and enter "Services. Msc "Start" "Services" to see more information, adjustments will be more convenient.

4. List the modified policies in the group policy

If the fault is caused by modifying the group policy, but do not know where to modify, you can click "Start → Run the command, type "rsop.msc" and press Enter to open the "Result Set of the Policy". List all the modified policies above, let the user slowly check and find out the strategy to be restored.

5. View System Log

Click "Start → Administrative Tools → Event Viewer" to open the "Event Viewer" of Windows XP, you can find the "Event Viewer" is like A thick system log records the information and security events that cause Windows XP to work abnormally, so you can find out the cause of the failure.

6. Using the Recovery Console

When using the Safe Mode and other startup methods to repair your system, consider using the Recovery Console. However, we need to install it manually (only 7MB of space). First put the Windows XP installation CD into the CD-ROM drive, click "Start → Run", type "X:\\I386\\WINNT32.EXE /cmdcons" and press Enter (X is the CD-ROM drive letter), then there will be a installation. In the window of the recovery console, click "Yes" to start the installation. After the installation is complete, the Recovery Console has been integrated into the boot menu. If the system has failed, you can't start it. You can use the Windows XP installation CD to start the computer, choose the option to repair Windows XP, and finally start the Recovery Console.

7. Using System Restore Function

If the system is faulty when installing/uninstalling the driver or software, using System Restore to recover can solve most problems. If you create a restore point before installing the software and drivers, the effect will be better. To start the system restore function of Windows XP, you can click "Start → All Programs → Accessories → System Tools → System Restore" to open the "System Restore Wizard" (pictured), and then create a restore point on it.
