Modem troubleshooting method under Windows XP

There are often netizens who have encountered such a problem: after installing Windows XP, I often have troubles that I can't detect the Modem or when I use Modem to establish a connection. May I ask what is the reason? Such problems with Modem in Windows XP are common in conflicts with another COM port. First you can open the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard to determine if Windows XP recognizes the COM port. If the wizard detects a COM port conflict, the modem and physical COM port may be configured to use the same COM number. If so, then you need to set the Modem to another unused COM port, or disable the physical COM port. After resolving the COM port conflict, be sure to restart Windows and try to find out if the Modem has returned to normal. In addition, if the Device Manager does not correctly identify the COM port, then you can try to manually add the port; to check the port configuration and duplicate ports, you can open the Settings Manager and double-click on the ports (COM and LPT). To view a list of COM ports; right-click the port you want to configure, and then click Properties to verify that the port and resource settings are correct. If you are using a duplicate COM port, right-click it and click Uninstall. In addition, the wrong COM port settings may also affect the normal operation of the Modem. You can check the current IRQ and input/output settings of the Modem COM port first, and then compare these settings with the recommended settings in the Modem manual. To check the COM port settings - click on "Device Manager", double-click "Ports (COM and LPT)" to view the list of COM ports, right-click on the COM port used by Modem, and display the "Communication Port Properties" dialog box. Click on the Resources tab to see the current COM port settings. Unless the manual recommends other settings, we recommend that your Modem use the standard settings of the COM port shown in Table 1. If you want to use other COM port settings, clear the "Use automatic settings" checkbox, click "Change settings", in "Value", enter the desired port settings.
