Getting Started: Learning Hard Disk Partitioning and Sizing

The newly purchased hard disk is equivalent to a “white paper”, and in order to use it better, we have to divide a few small pieces on the “white paper” and then put it on the grid. In this way, when users write or paint on "white paper", they are not only reasonable, but also make full use of resources. Today, the learning plan that King brings to everyone is the operation of “dividing” or “plaining” the hard disk, which is commonly referred to as “hard disk partitioning” and “adjusting partition”. The protagonist of this time is the famous Fdisk and the magician PQ.

a basic knowledge of the partition 1.

primary partition, extended partition, logical partitions

primary partition of a hard disk contains the operating system is started and the necessary files Hard disk partitioning of data. To install an operating system on a hard disk, the hard disk must have a primary partition.

extended partition is a partition in addition to the outer primary partition, but it can not be used directly, then it must be divided into several logical partitions job. The logical partition is the D, E, F and so on that we usually see in the operating system.

2. partition format

"format is equivalent to the grid marked on white paper," and this partition format is like this "grid" style, a different operating system hit the "grid The way is different. Currently, the partition formats used by Windows mainly include FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS. Almost all operating systems support FAT16. However, the hard disk using the FAT16 partition format is actually inefficient, so the partition format is now rarely used.

FAT32 uses 32-bit file allocation table, so the disk management capabilities greatly enhanced, which is currently the most frequently used partition format, Win98 /Me /2000 /XP support it. In general, when partitioning, King recommends that you set the partition to FAT32 format for maximum compatibility. Advantage

NTFS is security and stability is extremely good. However, except for WinNT/2000/XP, other operating systems cannot recognize the partition format. Therefore, partitions in this format cannot be seen in DOS
and Win9X.

3. zoning principle

Whichever partition software, we must follow the following procedure when setting up a new hard disk partition to: establish a primary partition → Create extended partition to create a logical partition → → Activate the primary partition → format all partitions (Figure 1).

Second, partition

easiest non-partitioning software "Windows boot floppy" in the "Fdisk" none other than the use Fdisk.

A King reminder: Fdisk version of the Win98 boot disk that came with older, does not recognize the capacity of 64GB or more large hard disk. Users with Internet access can also download the Win98 boot disk fix (http://download.microsoft.com/do
... 8/TW/263044CHT8.EXE) from Microsoft's website. The boot disk created after installing the fix program can partition the hard disk larger than 64GB.

1. Enter DOS
and execute Fdisk

Enter the DOS
state through the Win98 boot disk, and enter "Fdisk" under the A drive letter. Enter. Some English instructions appear and ask the user to make a choice. Roughly meaning

this dialog box asking you "whether to enable FAT32 support", type "Y" and press Enter after, they entered the Fdisk main interface (Figure 2).

There are four options on the main interface, the Chinese meaning is: 1 to establish DOS
primary partition or logical DOS
partition; 2 set active partition; 3 Delete the DOS
primary partition or logical DOS
partition; 4 display the partition information; if there are multiple hard disks installed in the system, the system will also appear the fifth option "Change current fixed disk drive" (Switch the hard drive). 2.

establish primary partition in Fdisk main interface "Enter choice:" Type "1" at the enter into the partitioning interface (FIG. 3).

partitioning interface also has three options, namely: ① the establishment of the main branch; ② establish an extended partition; ③ establishing logical partitions on the extended partition.

Enter "1" at "Enter choice:" and press Enter. At this point, the program scans the hard disk and asks "Do you want to use the largest available space (the entire hard disk) as the primary partition".

Note: Unless you want to use the entire hard disk as a partition, you must not select "Y" at this time, enter "N" and press Enter. The program scans the hard disk again and asks for the size of the primary partition after completion (Figure 4).

According to your own partitioning scheme, enter the corresponding number here and press Enter (the unit is MB, for example, if you want to create a 2GB partition, enter 2048, Multiply the value by 1024.) Then the screen prompts that the primary partition has been established, and shows the ratio of the capacity of the primary partition to the total capacity of the occupied hard disk. Press Esc to return to the main interface of Fdisk.

3. establish an extended partition

continue to select the first partition into the interface function Fdisk main interface, and then select the second entry is the extended partition. After the program scans the hard disk, it will display the current capacity of the extended hard disk. After returning directly, all the remaining space is established as an extended partition.

4. After the establishment of extended partition logical partitions

build is completed, in accordance with the procedure prompt "Press Esc key to continue" in the extended partition, then the program does not actually quit, but immediately scan Extend the partition, finally list the available space for the extended partition, and ask for the size of the logical partition (Figure 5).

Tip: Through the above steps, the primary partition has been divided, and now the "create logical partition on the extended partition" is to establish D, E, F, G, H and other partitions.

according to their partitioning scheme, the input capacity of the transport disc D, the system will automatically assign a logical drive letter "D" for the area. Because the extended partition has not been divided, the program will also appear as shown above, requiring the user to enter the size of the next logical partition. Users only need to enter the size of the logical partition according to the scheme, and the system will automatically assign them a drive letter. After the extended partition is divided, the system displays the number and capacity of all logical partitions and prompts to press “Esc” to return.

5.

activated when the primary partition on the hard drive at the same time when built primary and extended partitions, the primary partition must be activated, otherwise the hard disk will not boot the system. Return to the Fdisk main function interface and select “2” (Set active partition). At this time, the screen will display all the partitions on the main hard disk for the user to select. On the current hard disk, only the primary partition "1" and the extended partition "2" are entered. Type "1" in the dialog box and press Enter to return to the Fdisk main interface. At this point, the partitioning of the new hard disk is finished, press the "Esc" key twice to exit Fdisk, and then restart the computer. 6. The Format Partition

method according stated before using Win98 boot disk into DOS state again, enter "Format C:" in the letter A and the transport, this prompted All data on the C drive will be deleted. Enter "Y" and press Enter to confirm. At this point, the program starts to format the C drive. After the completion, the program prompts whether to assign the volume label to the C drive. Enter to confirm, the program will automatically add a volume label to the C drive. At this point, the C drive format is completed and the drive can store data. And so on, format D, E and other disks. Now you can install the operating system on your hard drive.
